1924

1924 Name changes to Pasadena College; first student newspaper, P'Cinian Weekly is published.

gfx_pres_WidmeyerDuring the presidency of Dr. Widmeyer a change in the name of Pasadena University was made. At the Southern California District Assembly held in June 1923 at Pasadena, this matter was considered. A vote was taken to retain the name Pasadena University. Sixty-seven voted to retain the name; eighty-two voted to have the name changed.

As the Assembly had voted to change the name of the Pasadena University and no name had been determined, another step needed to be taken. The proceedings of the Assembly state: J.I. Hill moved that the name of Pasadena University be changed to Western Nazarene College. Robert Pierce moved to amend by substituting Pasadena in place of Western. Dr. A.O. Hendricks offered a substitute motion that we defer action on this matter and leave it in the hands of the board of trustees. D.S. Corlett moved to amend the substitute motion that we choose twelve men-six elders and six laymen to confer with the board of trustees following General Assembly. This amendment carried, and the substitute motion as amended carried.

The board did not take action until its meeting of February 14, 1924. Nineteen votes were cast for a new name. For Pasadena College ten votes were cast. For Pasadena Nazarene College nine votes were cast. E. L. Hawkes, the president of the board of trustees, declared the name chosen-Pasadena College-to be the name of the institution. It was further voted that the secretary be authorized to take the necessary steps to change the name of the corporation. The "Order to Show Cause" was issued by a judge of the Superior Court of the State of California, in and for the County of Los Angeles, setting the 17th day of June 1924 as the date for the hearing to show cause why a petition for the change of name should not be granted. The petition was granted. So, at long last, everything was made legal and the college was now Pasadena College.
