1929 Orval Nease presidency begins

gfx_pres_Nease"The fire fell on the chapel services...and the glory came down." Professor Noble Ketchum, professor in the sociology department, published an article in the June 26, 1929 Herald of Holiness, outlining the highlights of the 1928-29 academic year.

Pasadena College graduates an exceptionally large class of young men and women this year, a number of these having had large experience in Christian work, others just entering the field. Several of these young people are devoting their lives to the work of education as a field for Christian ministry and will begin their work this fall.

In addition to the graduates from college, there was a large class of twenty-seven graduating from the Academy. The services were held in the Bresee Avenue church and as usual, were largely attended.

Pasadena College as an educational institution has a unique ministry to foreign speaking students preparing for Christian work among their own people. The college provides a special adviser for these students and separate classes in English. This year there was a class of brilliant young Japanese men and women numbering twenty-seven. Among these was a major in the Japanese army on furlough for two years, one of these years to be spent in America and another in Europe. He spent his year in America with Pasadena College. He is a devout Christian. Another of these students, a cultured young woman, is a noted teacher in her own country but is giving special attention to English and other subjects related to her profession. She likewise is an earnest Christian.

There are also classes of Korean young men, and an exceptionally large class of Filipino students. These Filipino students give themselves to evangelistic work while in college, and sometimes have reported as high as twelve converted or sanctified on a single Sunday.

The training courses in Christian work and the Christian workers' bands under the supervision of Rev. and Mrs. Ransom have been a source of great blessing to the students and an inspiration to the churches. There have been many calls this year, and the students have spent much time in college activities of a Christian nature, holding special services and assisting in various ways on the district.

Pasadena College has had a great year spiritually. The fire has fallen on the chapel services. Special prayer meetings have been held in the dormitories where the glory came down as in the earlier days of the Nazarene movement. These young people have the vision of the work of God and go out to assume the responsibilities of the ministry in various ways, and to devote themselves unreservedly to the cause of holiness.
