1950

1950 Don Hughes remembers arriving at PC immediately after WWII.

gfx_50_DonHughes2World War II was over (WWII) and Vets were checking out of the Army, Navy, Air Force, returning from Europe and the boggy marshes of the South Pacific, and checking into Pasadena College. The college was stunned, delighted, awed and nearly overwhelmed. Some 75 military men were trying to become civilians again and learn the culture of a college campus. Optimism and expectation were everywhere.

Into this setting a lone figure trudged, early this January 1946 morning. It was a long trek across Wiley Field. Carrying a battered black cardboard suitcase and $37.26 in his pocket, he walked up the west steps into the old Ad Building. After two nights and one day on a Greyhound bus, he didn't look like much of a bright collegiate find. With no college application preceding him and no high school scholastic achievements following, all he had to present were a dream of doing something for God and a hope of finding a place of acceptance.

Down the hall he walked wondering where to go and who to ask for help. Then a well-groomed, obviously upper classman in a neat tie and coat (that was the college uniform of the day) stepped up. "Can I help you?" he asked. Before a response could be given, he took the newcomer's hand, shook it firmly, and said, "Welcome to Pasadena College."

The memory is still vivid. I can take you today to within two feet of the spot. There began a half-century of experiences which shout out in appreciation: "There was a welcome!" PC prepared me well to 'do something for God' and I surely found a place of acceptance where friends and companions of a lifetime have been made and kept. I know because I was the weary traveler and Dr. Harrison R.S. Davis, now a retired missionary, was the greeter!
