Faculty Responsibility
All faculty employed by Point Loma Nazarene University need to be reasonably accessible to students. This involves the following actions :
- Hold regular office hours whose time and place have been clearly communicated to students.
- Check your PLNU e-mail at least once a day and request e-mails within one business day. To check e-mail from off campus, you will need a computer with internet access.
- Logon to the PLNU site (www.ptloma.edu).
- Click on Current Students from the left-hand menu. From the Current Students menu, select the "Webmail" option and then the "Faculty & Staff WebMail" option.
- At the prompt, enter your PLNU name, Tab, your system password, Enter. You will be able to read e-mail and respond to e-mail from this connection. You will not be able, however, to access documents from the PLNU network (to send as attachments, for example).
Remember, if you have already placed some items of your course on E-class, you can also communicate with individual students or with a whole class by using E-class rather than Outlook. When you are at PLNU’s home site, just access E-class as you would if you were on campus. Please note, however, that this will be an effective way to communicate with students only if students already know that they are expected to check E-class daily.
- Check your PLNU voice mail once a day and respond within one business day.
- If responding to a voice mail involves making a long-distance call, you may need to call from the department assistant's office. A long-distance phone call can only be made on the PLNU system if you have a long-distance account number to log-in after you have dialed the number. The system will signal the need for this code by giving a dial tone.
- You can check your voice mail from any place off-campus by following the two steps below:
- Dial 849-7070. When prompted, enter your 4-digit extension (and sub-extension if you have one).
- At the prompt, enter your voice mail code and proceed as you would in your office.
School or Department Faculty Meetings
At the invitation of the appropriate school or department, adjunct faculty may attend school or department meetings. Even when adjuncts attend department meetings, they do not vote. Adjunct faculty normally do not attend university faculty meetings unless invited by the Provost.
The schedule for Faculty meetings and department or school meetings can be found on the annual
administrative calendar . You should speak to your department chair/school dean to determine what meetings you will be expected to attend.
Benefits and Privileges
PLNU has a benefit package (retirement, medical, dental, and life insurance) for adjunct faculty teaching over half-time (16 units over the two semesters of an academic year). Adjunct faculty who qualify for this package should talk to their area dean and the office of Human Resources.
All PLNU adjunct faculty can purchase at the Business Office (Draper Hall) meal cards for use in the cafeteria. Each meal card has 30 punches. Breakfast costs 2 punches, lunch 3, and dinner 5. This benefit, like the others listed below, is available for all adjuncts regardless of the number of units taught.
All PLNU faculty, full-time and adjunct alike, benefit from a reduction (currently 10%) on anything purchased at the PLNU bookstore, with the exception of computers and computer-related items, textbooks, and food. You will need to present your PLNU ID or ID number in order to receive this benefit.
PLNU adjunct faculty are free to attend a variety of PLNU events (theatre, musical concerts, athletic events) at the same special, reduced price made available to full-time faculty.
