II. TEACHING ASSIGNMENT

C. MANAGING CLASS INFORMATION

Class Lists | Class Materials | E-class | Electronic Grading Options | Electronic Record Keeping

Class Lists

The Records Office generates electronic class lists, and they are available on each faculty member's personal computer. At times faculty assistance is required in conveying to students the requirement of completing financial arrangements before returning to class. Faculty are responsible for communicating discrepancies in the class lists to the Records Office.

You can print a class list by Selecting “Class Roster” from the “Instruction” menu in Faculty Access. The class list can be printed out on your department’s printer or it can be uploaded as an Excel file or into GradeMachine.

Final grades must be reported in a manner specified by the Records Office by the due date.

Class Materials

Your department chair/school dean will make available to you textbook materials, examples of course syllabi, and final examinations from previous semesters, as you prepare for your teaching assignment. Course descriptions and curricular programs are listed in the PLNU Catalog . Please discuss the syllabus content with the chair to be sure that it includes all elements expected by the University. Copies of your syllabus must be filed with the department chair/school dean.

E-Class

Many PLNU professors keep part of their class on-line through a Blackboard application called E-Class. Within 24 hours of your being entered by Records as the professor for a specific class, your class with be enrolled on the E-Class site.

For a training session in E-Class, call Kathy Potter (x2399). Although some professors only use E-Class for their syllabus, it is very easy to use and offers numerous advantages.

  • You can post daily updates about assignments or other class material.
  • You can e-mail one or more students easily.
  • Students can check on course assignments even if they have been absent.
  • You can have students take quizzes or surveys online without using class time.
  • You can keep your grades electronically.
  • You can create threaded discussions.
  • Students can submit assignments without filing up your e-mail box; submissions are dated and time-stamped.
  • You can create small groups within a class and empower the members of each group to communicate with each other via e-mail, discussion board, or file exchange.

Electronic Grading Options

Multiple-choice examinations can be graded mechanically using Scantron , QuickScore II or GradeMachine . Check with your department assistant about answer forms for these various electronic tools. Training materials for QuickScore II and for GradeMachine are available through Instructional Technology Services. Questions about the use of these tools can be directed to the Help Desk (x4357) or to Michelle Fitch (x2716).

Electronic Record Keeping

Your grade book can be kept in paper copy or electronically. For an electric record, you can use either GradeMachine or Excel. The PLNU system will upload a class list into either application.
