Promotion procedures for continuing faculty are as follows:
- Applications for promotion are made in writing to the Provost and due no later than 4:30 p.m. on the Friday of the first week of the spring semester, to be considered for promotion for the ensuing year. The appropriate form must be used, and recommendations from the chair/school dean (in the case of a faculty member) and college dean (in the case of a chair/school dean) must accompany the application.
- Applications for promotion must address the following criteria: teaching effectiveness, knowledge and scholarship, institutional service/collegial relationships, social/religious responsibilities and personal qualities. It is recommended that faculty members planning to apply for promotion begin the process early, prepare careful supporting documentation, and make appointments with the Provost, their college dean and their department chair/school dean to gain advice and to understand any weaknesses in their application, so that actions can be taken to strengthen it before submission. For additional assistance in completing the application, see Tenure Sabbatical Promotion Applications: A Practical Guide, available in Faculty Shared Folder, Center for Teaching and Learning, TSP Guide.
- A full faculty evaluation profile is required during the year a faculty member is seeking promotion or tenure.
- "Recommendation for Promotion" forms are available from Forms Central (go to Socrates/Shared or Zeus/Shared and click on Forms Central).
- Promotion applications are considered by the Faculty Status Committee.
- After full discussion and inquiry, the decision on recommendation for promotion is made by ballot vote in which a two-thirds majority of the entire committee is required for nomination to the President of the University. The President's recommendation is sent to the Committee on Academic Affairs of the Board of Trustees, and final action on the promotion is made by the Board of Trustees.
