J. RECRUITMENT POLICY

New faculty members are selected with care. Teaching at a university such as Point Loma requires a special type of person. The University seeks to find individuals who meet the academic expectations and who are personally committed to this type of university, its religious values and its educational philosophy. Persons without the doctorate may be appointed to the faculty, but normally such appointments are made with commitments to continued graduate study usually toward the doctorate.

The following procedures are normally followed in the recruitment and employment of new faculty:
  1. When need for an additional person or replacement seems likely, the department chair/school dean, the college dean, and the Provost meet to evaluate the need, and if appropriate, to declare a vacancy. They confer regarding prospects for the anticipated appointment and agree upon the desired qualifications and specializations. Special effort is made to recruit women and minority candidates.
  2. Normally, a Position Available brochure is printed and distributed nationally, positions are posted on the Web, or other advertisements are posted, soliciting applications. Exceptions would be instances where there is obviously a sufficient number of satisfactory candidates at hand.
  3. Applications are received, reviewed, and evaluated.
  4. From these applications, the most desirable prospects are agreed on by the department chair/school dean and the college dean. Other faculty in the department/school are consulted, as feasible.
  5. The final candidate(s) are normally brought to the University for interviews.
  6. Upon consultation and decision by the department chair/school dean, the college dean, the Provost, and the President, a contract is offered.
  7. The University offers assistance to new faculty in moving to the San Diego area (see Moving Policy).
  8. All contracts are contingent upon favorable action by the Board of Trustees.
