  1. Chapel

Full-time faculty members are expected to attend regularly scheduled chapel services unless occasionally prevented from doing so by special circumstances. The chapel service is a meaningful symbol of the unique Christian character of the University. Most student assemblies and similar events usually do not require faculty members' presence, though it is appreciated by students. Chapel participation is an annual contractual commitment. Periodically, special faculty chapels are scheduled.

  2. Spiritual Renewal Week and Convocations

Special religious emphasis events are part of the Point Loma experience. These include Spiritual Renewal Week (one per semester), lecture series, and other special activities. Additional service times may be scheduled during the day (such as on Thursday during Spiritual Emphasis Week) and in the evening. Faculty members are expected to give cooperation and full support to these activities.

  3. New Faculty Seminar

An intensive seminar is held for new faculty each fall. This seminar includes a full range of topics designed to assist new faculty in their adaptation to Point Loma, its educational philosophy, its traditions, and its administrative practices. New faculty are assigned load credit for their attendance and participation.

  4. Faculty Fall Convocation

A one-day convocation is held at the beginning of each fall semester for faculty and administrative staff. A second day is set aside for department/school meetings. This convocation is primarily the responsibility of the Provost.

A community dinner for all University employees and spouses takes place during the opening days of the Fall Semester. Full-time faculty members are expected to attend the convocation, department/school meetings, and the dinner.

  5. Commencement Activities

All full-time members of the faculty and administration are required to appear in appropriate academic apparel at Commencement and other designated occasions. The University, through the Records Office, provides such apparel for all faculty members who need and request it. Adjunct faculty members may be invited but are not required to participate.
