M. STUDENT ASSISTANTS
In the event that a faculty member has an unusually heavy teaching load, consideration will be given to providing assistance in scoring (not grading) examinations, keeping attendance records, checking workbook materials, preparing syllabi and examinations, and other work. All requests for such assistance are made to the appropriate department chair/school dean who evaluates the request and makes recommendations to the college dean.
Upon approval of a request for student assistants, the following procedure is used for hiring student employees:
- Finding a Student Employee
There are a couple of ways at PLNU to find student employees:
- By making announcements in your classes or asking colleagues to make announcements in their classes
- By calling the Student Employment Office and requesting to have a job notice posted on the "Job Board". (The Job Board is now on the web--password protected, so only PLNU students can access the jobs)
Please note that you may not hire your relatives.
- Hiring Process
Once you have found the students you would like to hire, please send them to the Student Employment Office to fill out the following paperwork:
- I-9 (verify employment eligibility, required by the Immigration and Naturalization Service);
- W-4 (tax withholdings); and
- PLNU Authorization Form (as the supervisor, you will fill out the bottom portion authorizing each student to be charged to your department/school budget).
This paperwork must be COMPLETED before your assistants start working (or training). You will receive the pink copy of the Authorization Form once the student is eligible to begin working. Please do not allow a student to begin work until you receive this form. Failure to comply with Federal requirements subjects the University to significant financial penalties.
