PRINTING AND COPYING / COPYRIGHT LAWS
The Reprographics Center serves faculty printing and
copying needs. A completed work order signed by the person
responsible for the department/school budget must accompany each order.
For questions on printing specifications, faculty should call the
Reprographics Center.
Single copies, or runs of not more than ten
copies, may be made on photocopy machines in several locations on
campus. Larger printing jobs must be processed in the
Reprographics Center. Reprographics has a pick-up and delivery
service and requests may be made by phone.
Copyright Laws
Copyright laws have an important effect on the teaching
and research functions of the University. In many cases the
issues are not clear and over time are being settled by the
courts.
Below are a few guidelines provided by recent legal
rulings.

- Make multiple copies of a work for classroom use if it
has already been copied for another class in the same
institution

essay from the same author more than once in a semester,
or make multiple copies from the same collective work or
periodical issue more than three times a semester
- Make multiple copies of works more than nine times in the
same semester
- Make a copy of works to take the place of an anthology
- Make a copy of consumable materials, such as workbooks

teaching, or in preparation for teaching a class, of the

250 words

less than 2,500 words

1,000 words or 10 percent of the work, whichever
is less

from longer works

- Will accept a single copy of a chapter, article, or short
story. The copy should include a notice of copyright.
- Will not accept the same item from the same faculty
member from semester to semester unless permission has
been granted by the copyright holder. (The library will
provide instructions for requesting such permission.)

guidelines of brevity (unless permission has been
granted).
