- Philosophy of the Teaching Library
The purpose of a university library is to support the goals of the institution--to provide higher education in the liberal arts and preparation for service and leadership in selected professions.
The librarians and the classroom faculty are partners in the process of helping students acquire library literacy--the attitude and the skills to carry them through a lifetime of inquiry and discovery.
Service to the campus community is broad and flexible enough to meet each individual's needs and expectations. Collection development supports the academic curriculum, research needs, and general reading interests of faculty and students.
- Book Orders
Departmental/school book budgets are allocated by a formula developed by the faculty. Each department/school recommends how its book allocation will be spent. Departments/schools channel all orders through one of their faculty members who forwards the requests to their library liaison.
- InterLibrary Loans
Students and faculty may request an InterLibrary Loan of books and articles which are not a part of the library collection. Books--may be requested online through the Link+ service for delivery to Ryan Library within 2-5 days. Articles--may be requested through ILLiad, Ryan Library's online interlibrary loan process. Charges incurred for photocopies are the responsibility of the borrower.
- Reference Service
Reference service is available during most hours that the library is open with the exception of hours after 10 p.m. In addition to helping students, staff and faculty locate materials in the library, the reference librarians are available for teaching bibliographic instruction to classes. Departments/schools should provide a copy of all current course syllabi for the library to keep on file.
- Reserve Materials
Ryan Library cooperates with the faculty in providing materials for required reading on reserve status. Faculty members are asked to submit lists of reserve materials at least one week before the class receives the assignment.
A faculty member's personal copies, as well as library books or journal articles, may be placed on reserve. The time limits for student use range from one hour to one week. Journal articles will be placed on E-Reserve, an electronic reserve system available through Phineas, the library online catalog.
Library policy regarding copies of copyrighted materials states that the reserve desk:
- Will accept a single copy of a chapter, article, or short story. The copy should include a notice of copyright.
- Will not accept the same item from the same faculty member from semester to semester unless permission has been granted by the copyright holder. (The library will provide a form requesting such permission.)
- Will not accept multiple copies or items that exceed the guidelines of brevity (unless permission has been granted).
