Art

Department of Art and Design

While the definition of art can seem highly subjective, artistic expression comes in various mediums such as painting, drawing, sculpting and graphic design. Artists are usually people who are able to accept criticism or even rejection, in order to improve their future performance. Generally, artists have natural artistic and creative talent and are willing to forgo other, potentially higher paying jobs, in order to freely pursue their passion for art.

The curriculum for art majors depends mainly on the artist’s medium, with specific, core Art classes in drawing, history and design mandatory for all concentrations.

Currently, there is a large demand for people with artistic training, according to The Princeton Review, especially those with graphic design and computer skills. Internet and software companies hire thousands of artists each year. In addition, advertising and publishing companies require illustrators and photographers in assembling their products.

Overview

This program builds on PLNU’s liberal arts foundation of general education. Students explore relationships between the art disciplines, and build connections with other academic fields. Studies in traditional, nontraditional, western, and non-western art forms encourage students to develop a broad understanding of the visual arts.

Through the making of art and the study of art history, criticism and aesthetics, the department seeks to develop proficiencies in the studio and design arts. Its main goals also include promoting the cultural, intellectual, spiritual, and aesthetic life of students and the university.

Special Features:
