Computer Science

Department of Mathematical, Information and Computer Sciences

Are you the one your friends or parents call on for help with technology? Are you logical and creative, good at math, and adept at problem solving? If so, computer science may be the right major for you. Computer science is problem solving using computers. Computer science majors learn how computers work, from the underlying electronics to the use of high level application programs. In addition, they learn how to design software to perform tasks and provide services. Computer scientists are often the creative force behind computer games, robots and interactive graphics. They learn skills used to make a difference in such areas as medicine, mathematics, science, business, communication and linguistics.

Overview

The Department of Mathematical, Information, and Computer Sciences offers both a major and a minor in computer science. Faculty members work closely with students to help them achieve their goals. Our accomplished faculty also conducts research with current students. Recently, topics have included artificial intelligence, hardware simulations, internet applications, computational neuroscience, stereo vision using genetic algorithms, and constraint guided scheduling. These types of research opportunities provide experience with modern technology and current real-world applications.

Student Perspectives:

“The best thing about being a Computer Science major is that we learn technical skills, competency, and how to think logically, which are integral to the job market of the future.”

“I get to do what I used to do as hobby.”

“At PLNU, we are taught in small classes by professors who know their field very well and care about the students’ understanding of the topics.”

“Where else but PLNU can you code a program outdoors and enjoy sunny skies with 70 degree temperatures…in late November?!”

“The Mathematical, Information, and Computer Sciences Department at PLNU provides great connections with people in industry and alumni to help with our future careers.”
