Dietetics

Department of Family and Consumer Sciences

According to the American Dietetic Association Web site, “Dietetics is the science and art of applying the principles of food and nutrition to health.” Food, health and wellness affect all of us. If you have a passion for these subjects, like science, and envision yourself sharing your growing knowledge of nutrition with others, dietetics may be the ideal field for you.

Overview

Point Loma offers a major in dietetics through the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences, leading to a Bachelor of Science degree. If you major in dietetics, you will take courses in nutrition, physiology, biology, chemistry, food science, and health.

Special Features:

PLNU’s dietetics program has been granted developmental accreditation by the American Dietetics Association (ADA). This significant accomplishment enables current and future students in the dietetics major to participate in accredited internships after graduation. These internships are a mandatory prerequisite for the registered dietician (R.D.) exam.

Career Opportunities:

If you major in dietetics, you may decide to become a registered dietician. Registered dieticians have many options such as working in a hospital, developing recipes, working for WIC (a federally funded program that counsels low-income women with children), conducting research, or teaching in a variety of settings.

The Department of Family and Consumer Sciences also prepares students for careers in business, industry, public and private agencies, schools, and institutions that provide goods, services, education, and information to consumers and families. Many students have become teachers, school administrators, social service agents, family/adult educators, manufacturer’s representatives, fashion directors, community service agents, nutrition educators, and healthcare specialists.
