Department of Family and Consumer Sciences
Are you always up on the latest fashions? Do you love to shop? Have more copies of Vogue than room to store them? If so, fashion merchandising may be an ideal area of study for you. Whether you want to end up in design, as a buyer, in marketing, or in the fashion industry in another capacity, fashion merchandising can prepare you for your future in the fashion world. You will learn about different fabrics, the history of the fashion industry, how to predict trends, and how to anticipate consumer needs and preferences.
Overview
Point Loma’s Department of Family and Consumer Sciences offers a major in consumer and environmental sciences with a concentration in fashion merchandising. The major and fashion merchandising concentration offer courses in apparel construction, the fashion industry, fashion computer-aided design, apparel in human behavior and culture, textile sciences, marketing, and management (among others). The faculty is committed to developing and maintaining a close relationship with the students in the department.

Career Opportunities:
A major in consumer and environmental sciences with a concentration in fashion merchandising can prepare you for many exciting careers. You could become a fashion director, buyer, designer, magazine editor or photographer. You could also go into marketing, advertising, public relations, sales, or other industries. Students have become manufacturer’s representatives, fashion directors, businesspeople, and teachers.
