Are you fascinated by the relationship between humans and technology? Do you like working with networks and computer hardware? If so, you may want to consider the field of information systems. Information science is the study of the relationships between information, organizations and human beings. Information systems majors learn how to create, collect, store and use information to help make decisions in modern organizations. Organizations cannot survive without information systems, and so information scientists have become critical members of organizational leadership teams.


Overview


Point Loma offers both a major and a minor in information systems through the Department of Mathematical, Information, and Computer Sciences. Faculty members work closely with students to help them achieve their goals and the department has a well-established program of internships. Students are required to gain practical experience by working for a local companies and nonprofit organizations in areas such as systems administration, web programming and software engineering. If you major in information systems, you will also benefit from accomplished faculty who conduct research with current students in areas such as artificial intelligence, web applications development and student learning. These types of research opportunities provide experience with modern technology.
