Interior Design

Department of Family and Consumer Sciences

When you walk into a room, the first thing you notice is how you could make improvements to the existing design. It’s not a bad thing, but you have your own unique and functional style. You see space and three-dimensional form as a blank canvas, waiting for an artist’s touch. Design is inside you, just waiting to come out. If you love setting up and decorating rooms and are looking for an outlet to express your art and style, the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences has a place for you.

Overview

PLNU offers a concentration in housing and interior environments (also known as interior design or interior decorating) through a consumer and environmental Sciences major. The lower division requirements include multiple courses in different subjects, including fundamentals of art and interior design, accounting, economics and computers, in addition to departmental courses like human development and family housing. Upper division requirements supplement several business courses with the Family and Consumer Sciences classes. Students learn principles of management, marketing and advertising and promotion. Additional art courses are also recommended. These courses prepare students to identify problems in design and concepts and offer creative, functional solutions.
