Managerial & Organizational Communication

Department of Communication and Theatre

The study of organizational communication is uniquely suited to the “information age” in which we all live and work. Personal, social, and vocational success all depend on effective communication. According to the National Association of Colleges and Employers, the skills most necessary for college graduates to succeed in the job market are all communication related including oral communication, interpersonal competence, and collaborative teamwork. If taking a leadership role in today’s knowledge economy by working with and through people to create a compelling organizational vision is for you, the managerial and organizational communication (MOCM) major at PLNU is your home.

Overview

The MOCM major is specifically designed to provide you with the communication and professional tools you need to succeed across a wide spectrum of jobs – most of which are people intensive. The program is an intentional combination of business fundamentals with a primary focus on human interaction in organizational contexts. Research suggests that managers spend 70-95 percent of their day communicating with people. So as a field of study, we look at how communication enables teamwork, creates vision, influences and coordinates people’s behavior, and sustains and changes organizations.

Required courses in the major include classes from many areas of study, including: interpersonal communication, microeconomics, statistics, and accounting. Upper division courses include persuasion, organizational communication and managerial communication, and communication theory.
