Department of Mathematical, Information and Computer Sciences
Do you like puzzles and finding order in chaos? Are you logical, creative, and adept at problem solving? Then mathematics may be the major for you. Mathematics is the search for patterns in things that do not appear to be similar. Math gives results that are both beautiful and incredibly useful. From solving diverse and complex equations, to utilizing technology to decipher coded systems, students learn both theoretical and computational mathematics so that they can utilize the power of mathematics in a wide variety of circumstances and careers.
Overview
The Department of Mathematical, Information, and Computer Sciences offers both a major and a minor in mathematics. There are multiple tracks available in the program including ones to prepare students for graduate school, careers in industry, and secondary school teaching. Faculty members work closely with students to help them achieve their goals. Our accomplished faculty also conducts research with current students. Recently, topics have included Newton’s understanding of calculus, the connection between mathematics and music, geographic information systems, data mining, the four color theorem, the development of perspective in art, random number generation, and the optimization of schedules. These types of research opportunities provide experience with modern technology and current real-world applications.

Student Perspectives:
“The best decision I made for my future wasn’t the decision to come to Point Loma, but the decision to become a math nerd. The major is fun and the colleagues are unbeatable.”
“The best part about being a math major is knowing your professors can have fun too!”
“The department of mathematics is worth being a part of because the professors care about you and go to great lengths to see you succeed.”
“The best thing about the math department is the one-to-one attention you get from the small, close-knit faculty.”
“Q: What is purple and commutes?
A: An abelian grape….. You’ll get it after Abstract Algebra.”
