Spanish

Department of Literature, Journalism and Modern Languages

Is Maria from Sesame Street your hero? Do you love the beauty of foreign language? Spanish is an area of study that has many practical applications for students in San Diego.

Spanish is the fourth most widely spoken language in the United States. In California and the southwestern United States, millions of people speak Spanish as a first language in their homes. If you have a desire to be able to speak, read, write, and comprehend Spanish – beyond the hello, goodbye, and counting to 10 that Maria taught us – then this major is right for you.

Overview

The Spanish major at PLNU is offered through the Department of Literature, Journalism, and Modern Languages. The lower division requirements are Spanish I and II. Upper division requirements broaden the scope of study and include advanced grammar and composition; Latin and Mexican American culture, history, and literature; and Spanish linguistics.

Students who anticipate going on to graduate school to study Spanish are encouraged to become familiar with French or German as well. A Spanish minor is also offered to students as a complement to another discipline.
