Research in the Chronicle of Higher Education and conversation with Joyce Falk, Assistant VP for Human Resources at PLNU gives the following rough estimates of wage ranges for staffing for an independent PLNU Office of Institutional Research:

Director (with a Ph.D.)  $55,000-$65,000
Director (with a MA or MS)  $45,000-$55,000
Research Assistant (with a BA or BS) $35,000 - $40,000

Median salaries (as of 2002) for Directors of Institutional Research at various types of universities were obtained from consulting articles in the Chronicle of Higher Education (Careers in Institutional Research, by Jennifer Jacobson, Chronicle of Higher Education 10/23/02):

Doctoral institutions $81,938
Comprehensive universities $60,594;
Four-year colleges  $55,825
Two-year colleges, $59,025.

The article also stated that a recent Ph.D. might go into institutional research in the entry level position of "data analyst" or "research analyst" with a salary starting in the mid-$40s.
