Point Loma Nazarene University exists to provide higher education in a vital Christian community where minds are engaged and challenged, character is modeled and formed, and service becomes an expression of faith. Being of Wesleyan heritage, we aspire to be a learning community where grace is foundational, truth is pursued, and holiness is a way of life.

 

Mission Context
The University, established in 1902 by the Church of the Nazarene, offers quality liberal arts and professional programs on its main campus in San Diego and select graduate and professional programs throughout the denomination’s southwest educational region.

 

Vision
Point Loma Nazarene University will be a nationally prominent Christian university and a leading Wesleyan voice in higher education and the church – known for excellence in academic preparation, wholeness in personal development, and faithfulness to mission.

The University will be recognized for:

  • Spiritual vitality centered on the Lordship of Jesus Christ.

As we faithfully pursue this vision, the University will necessarily change and develop. The following indicators provide a partial snapshot of what one might observe in a visit to the University in 2015:

  • A fully constructed San Diego campus including the science center, athletic complex, and physical plant parking structure.
  • A total university enrollment of 6,000 students.
  • A capacity undergraduate enrollment on the Point Loma campus.
  • A completed feasibility study (with potential development) of alternative undergraduate centers and/or a second undergraduate campus.
  • A revitalized/re-designed undergraduate summer school.
  • Six professional schools.
  • Ten graduate sites.
  • Ten master’s degree programs.
  • Two doctoral programs.
  • Collaborative educational ventures with corporate and church partners.
  • An ethnic diversity of 25% in undergraduate enrollment, 35% at the graduate level.
  • Improved financial strength reflected by a Moody’s Baa1 Bond rating.
  • Foundation assets of $100 million.
  • Planned gifts of $150 million with a 25-year horizon (2040).
  • University Fund support of $2 million annually.

University Strategic Goals: 2004-06

  1. To fully develop a model for graduate studies and implement a multi-year growth plan for each graduate program;
  2. To review and revise the undergraduate student experience in General Education and related co-curricular programs;
  3. To conduct a 5-year comprehensive campaign for capital and scholarship development;
  4. To enhance the University’s relationship with the Church;
  5. To strengthen the University’s Wesleyan voice in higher education and the church; and
  6. To create an integrated University communication and marketing plan and supporting structure.
