Appendix 9
Summary of Reports to Assessment Committee by Department Chairs and School Deans, Spring 2005

The Assessment Committee asked Department Chairs/School Deans to meet with us during the spring term 2005, and dialogue about where they are in their major program assessment efforts. To date, all but one met with us and one reported through a committee member. This is a brief summary of our meetings with Department Chairs/School Deans during Spring 2005, to assess our readiness for the Educational Effectiveness Review.

During our dialogue with chairs/school deans, we asked what they needed, or if the Assessment Committee or University could better support their assessment efforts. The following needs were discussed, and most of these were mentioned by multiple departments/schools:

  1. Better support from Information Technology to access CARS data in order to track students who change majors.
  1. Improved support for the Alumni Office so they can do a better and more accurate job of tracking alumni.
  1. Budget for testing, external reviewer stipends, and attendance at discipline-specific development workshops to improve knowledge about assessment.
  1. Better clarity on reporting guidelines and how to document assessment program.
  1. Flexibility in model to allow programs with external professional accreditation to document compliance without increasing workload.
  1. Time and staff support to get a data collection system up and running.
  1. Hammer to get faculty motivated and to cooperate with the chair!!! :)
