Finance and Administrative Services Planning Goal #3
2002-2006

1. What is a visionary goal that your unit set?

To reduce energy usage and solid waste on campus.

2. What information and data did you use to set this goal?

  • The University has as one of its core values the stewardship of resources
  • The University’s energy, water and waste management expenses
  • The volume of waste from the University
  • An evaluation performed by Siemens Building Technologies that indicated that campus retrofits could provide significant cost savings in our operating expenses.

3. What actions did you take to try to reach this goal?

  • In 2003 the University initiated an aggressive effort to reduce solid waste on the campus through a comprehensive recycling program
  • In 2004 PLNU contracted with Siemens Building Technologies to perform a two-phase project to retrofit mechanical, irrigation, and lighting systems with more efficient technologies (see Siemens Building Technology)
  • In 2005 the University expanded its recycling program to include its food service provider

4. What progress did you make?

  • Phase I of the Siemens retrofit is complete and Phase II will be completed by spring 2006
  • The actual savings in energy and water consumption have thus far exceeded the projections
  • After one year there was a 50% reduction in solid waste from the campus with further reductions in the second year
  • Food waste is collected, treated, and becomes fertilizer, diverting 8 tons of waste each month from local landfills

5. What information and data did you use to evaluate your progress?
