Spiritual Development Planning Goal #1
2003-2006

1. What is a visionary goal that your unit set?

Increase student involvement in local ministry opportunities and strengthen the student leadership for our ministry groups.

2. What information and data did you use to set this goal?

  • One of PLNU’s Core Values is “Service as an Expression of Faith”
  • Student participation data and interaction with local agencies that indicated that there was room for growth in the number of students placed in service ministries.

3. What actions did you take to try to reach this goal?

  • Recruited leaders passionate about serving our campus community and our neighboring community
  • Developed an enhanced ministry leader training process.  This training includes:
    • Intense 5 day LEAD training at the beginning of each year
    • Weekly training meetings both semester
    • One training retreat each semester
  • Engaged in intentional efforts to increase student participation in ministry opportunities
    • Add new ministries each year
    • Recruit through chapel day, publicity, and special events

4. What progress did you make?

  • Student Ministry leader training has been an asset to the leaders.   In the 2005-06 academic year each leader’s growth will be assessed using entrance and exit interviews.
  • The number of ministries has expanded.
  • Student interest in ministry has increased.
  • The number of students who are participating in ministries has grown.

5. What information and data did you use to evaluate your progress?

  • Data gathered on number of students who expressed interest, actual number of student participants, and number of leaders.
  • There has been a steady increase in the number of students who expressed interest and in student participants (see Student Ministry Data).
  • The student leader data shows a slight downturn in 03-04; these numbers reflect the refining of expectations of leaders in 03-04 which decreased the number of students who met the requirements.  However the number of leaders has grown as the expectations became embraced as part of Student Ministry culture (see Student Ministry Data).
