III. Minutes from 04/29/05:  Approved.

IV. Establishing an Academic Plan (Maria Zack):  1) There are certain problems with the graduate data set, and several have been resolved.  One that is not is the issue of institutional selectivity, which is based on # applications vs. # students accepted.  Because there is personal counseling that happens before the application process, many students are encouraged not to apply and are therefore screened out at that point.  This means that our acceptance rate for graduate programs is close to 100% and it looks like we have no institutional selectivity.  We should probably be tracking substantive inquiries, i.e. those that result in a conversation, not just web-hits.  What does GSC think about this?  Maria will follow up with an e-mail to graduate program directors.  2)  WASC Academic Plan:  a) Need to have conversations around mission / vision that are scheduled for various faculty forums which are to be on rotating Mondays & Thursdays.  The concern is that faculty who are not based in San Diego will not be able to contribute very well to these conversations.  To get around this issue, Maria is thinking of holding independent forums in Arcadia & Bakersfield.  Phone and e-mail conferencing are also being considered.  b) Two of the main issues for the graduate program academic plan deal with shape and residency, i.e. how are graduate students shaped according to our mission, and is their learning experience impacted by a non-residence program?

  • Need draft of mission/vision statement for graduate programs by January.
  • Need for each graduate program and site to document what is being done to “shape” their students by December.
  • Need following modifications to criteria in Patrick Allen’s draft document by December:
Criteria 3:  Add statement about guild standards being used.
Criteria 4:  Add statement that the graduate  faculty who are hired are held to the same “mission-fit” standards as the undergraduate faculty.
    Criteria 5:  Rewrite 5.4.
Add Criteria 7 where graduate programs outline how they carry out the “shape” part of their work.  (Keep it general so that it applies to all graduate programs.)

V. Proposal for opening Administrative Services cohorts and an MA Educational Leadership in Rancho Cucamonga & Temecula (David):  (Note:  Downey will be removed from the proposal because it was already approved.)  RC is within 25 miles of Arcadia, but Temecula is outside of the 25 mile range from a regional center, so will require WASC approval.  Similar programs that started in Corona & Chino in 2005 are successful thus far.  Temecula may end up growing into an undergraduate campus as well, but this is still being investigated.  Meanwhile, opening these programs will help PLNU to establish a presence there.  Alan:  State at end that programs will continue to pay for themselves.  Expand info about adjunct faculty - % with Doctorates vs. Masters.  Enedina:  Expand on mission fit of adjunct faculty.  Pat:  State that curriculum includes a faith perspective and that classes are held in our own facilities.  Approved with modifications recommended.
