XIII. Minutes from 11/01/05: Approved.

XIV. Mission, Core Values, and Vision Statements (Darrel / Maggie):  Need to come up with graduate core values that relate to institutional core values.

  • Some crucial ones are scholarship that informs teaching & learning, professional service, and mentoring.  Sue pointed out that mentoring should be woven throughout all of the core values.
  • Darrel pointed out that the faculty & staff make up an intentionally Christian community at the graduate level in a way that is different from the undergraduate level, because the graduate faculty & staff work so closely together to meet the needs of the graduate students and there are not supporting departments like spiritual development & counseling.  Maggie pointed out that it would be nice to create a document to give to students that says who we are – an explication of the Nazarene and Wesleyan perspective and how it informs what we do.
  • Barbara pointed out that “development of a student as a whole person” will look different for graduate students who are often already adults with families.  It is more like a transformation of these students into servant leaders in their community.
  • Discussion of global perspective indicated that this may look quite different in the various graduate programs and will need some thought.

How to proceed?  Enter comments under each core value and have everyone look at them and comment on them on e-class.  Then perhaps assign an essay to each person.
