Point Loma Nazarene University
Undergraduate Course Transfer Policy
Students Entering PLNU with Transfer Course Work

Point Loma Nazarene University accepts transfer courses under the following circumstances:

  • Transfer work is presented in the form of a sealed, official transcript and will be accepted in whole as an historical record.
  • The institution is a regionally accredited college or university.
  • Full credit is given for baccalaureate courses (excluding technical, vocational – i.e. lifeguarding and EMT or work experience). Courses will be transferred in chronological order.
  • Students must be currently enrolled or accepted to the University for courses to be transferred.
  • All eligible courses will be transferred as historical record, and those graded D- or higher will receive credit. Only those courses receiving letter grades will be credited toward general education or major requirements.
  • Up to 70 units may be transferred from a Community College.*

Included in these 70 units could be 32 units maximum of the following types of credit:

Advanced Placement*

CLEP*

International Baccalaureate*

On-line courses (up to 12 units previously approved by the

Records Office.)

*These units will only be accepted for lower division credit

  • Course work from a non-accredited institution may be accepted on an individual basis pursuant to departmental review.
  • Students must meet all the general education, departmental, grade and residency requirements as stated in the Undergraduate catalog.

Current PLNU Students Taking Course Work Elsewhere

  • Current students wanting to take courses at another institution for specific credit must obtain pre-approval from the Records Office.
  • Official transcripts need to be sent to the Point Loma Nazarene University Records Office as soon as the course grade is posted.
  • Graduating seniors who wish to take a final course at another institution must file appropriate petitions at the Records Office and be advised their degree will not be posted prior to the receipt of official transcript. The completion semester of the transfer work will determine the semester the degree will be posted at PLNU.
  • If a student receives a C- or below in a course, the course may be repeated to replace the lower grade. In order to improve GPA, the same course must be repeated at the original institution. Students may transfer an equivalent course after receiving an “F” at PLNU, but the new grade will be averaged and not replace the “F” in the student’s GPA. The repeat policy only applies to courses retaken at the original institution and the units will only be counted once.
