The Spirit Bell
History
The University Bell was originally brought to the Pasadena campus in approximately 1963 by the Pasadena College Cheerleaders and was used during various athletics and ceremonial events. It was donated by the Santa Fe Railroad company, through the solicitation of Barry Meguiar (the 1963-64 ASB President) and Steve Reed. The Bell was rung to announce the beginning of athletic events and other functions. Three weeks after its initial appearance the cheerleaders, led by Dave Probst, decided to take the bell to a basketball game which was being held at Westmont College. After the game a scuffle broke out between the Fans of Westmont and Pasadena College, during which, the Bell was stolen and apparently thrown off the pier in Santa Barbara. To the best of anyone ’s knowledge, it remains there even now – may it rest in peace. When the campus was moved to Point Loma, the school was able to procure another bell from the Santa Fe Railroad Company. The Bell has been rung on occasion since its purchase, but due to fear of it being stolen again, it was locked in storage and eventually forgotten.
Spirit
In November 2005 the Bell resurfaced at the Homecoming Basketball game and served as a trophy for a spirit competition amongst the students. The Bell continues to serve as a means by which the entire student body can come together to create a positive atmosphere filled with high energy and school spirit. The Bell is a symbol of the spirit of the student body, and more specifically, it is a symbol of the love that the students have for the community that is Point Loma Nazarene University.
Beginnings and Endings
In many societies and cultures, bells are rung to announce the beginning or ending of an important event, such as a wedding or a funeral. Bells invitingly summon people into church buildings and respectfully wish them on their way when the service is over. Bells are often rung in celebration, in mourning, and as a warning in times of danger. The University Bell is rung at New Student Orientation as a symbol of the invitation sent out to the incoming students to join our community. It is also rung at the first chapel of the year to signal the beginning of the academic year. When the ringing of the Bell is heard at the start of an athletic match, opponents beware – for the Lions have shown up in force. Finally the Bell is rung at graduation to symbolize the ending of the college experience. The University Bell is one of the first things heard by new students arriving on campus and one of the last things heard by graduates as they leave. In this way the Bell is a symbol of each student ’s experience here at PLNU.

We've had a committee of alumni working on our strategy since we lost last year. You will get a free t-shirt when you purchase an alumni basketball ticket. We can't post any other details online- the students will find out! All that can be said is: We can give you details if you visit the Alumni Booth on Saturday (north side of the Campus Mall, 9:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.), go to your reunion, or go to the Tip-Off Tailgate Dinner.

Tickets to the game will be sold in three places on November 22, 2008.
1. The Alumni Booth on the north side of the Campus Mall, 9:30 a.m.- 2:30 p.m.
2. Golden Gymnasium, 9:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m., right before the game.
3. The Tip-Off Tailgate Dinner (ticket needed for this event) in the Nicholson Commons Dining Room, 4:30 p.m. - 5:30 p.m.

PLNU is Playing Trevecca Nazarene University this year. Game time is 5:30 p.m. for the Men's team. The women's team will be away at a tournament, we hope they do well!
