Not sure what to do with that empty Styrofoam coffee cup? How about building a house?

That’s what several faculty and about 19 students from Point Loma Nazarene University did in northern Armenia last month, where they spent nearly three weeks building model homes of specialized polystyrene blocks.

George Fermanian blazed a new trail when he led 28 participants to Yerevan, Armenia in effort to establish an affordable housing project. The group included students, alum and faculty from Point Loma Nazarene University, Baylor University and USC. In just 14 days, participants launched an organic agriculture program and raised two model homes primarily out of polystyrene blocks, better known as Styrofoam.

A structurally sound house made out of styrofoam? Sounds like a pipe dream, not a cost-effective model for building homes in developing nations. However, Point Loma Nazarene University (PLNU) recently led a construction effort in Armenia to build a residence primarily out of innovative polystyrene blocks, which is the same substance as Styrofoam coffee cups.
