Art Alumni

Dear Art and Design Alum:

Greetings!   We, the faculty and staff of the Art and Design Department, would like to hear from you. How are you? Where are you? What are you doing? We hope and pray that things are going really well. We are trying to get in touch with all of our former students. If you would please fill out our questionnaire, we would really appreciate it. That way, we will be able to keep you up to date about all of the exciting developments here, send you newsletters and exhibition announcements, and you can do likewise for us. As always, we are looking for ways to improve the program, and your input is extremely valuable. After all, only you can tell us about the impact this program has had on your life and suggest areas that we may need to strengthen. Filling out the survey will help us with that pertinent information. Here are a few noteworthy items that may interest you:

  • The Department now has five full-time professors and at least ten adjunct instructors teaching in a typical year.
  • Some of our newer courses are Web Design, Illustration, Contemporary Art History, Non-Western Art History and Contemporary Studio Practice and Seminar.
  • Twenty-seven G5 computers now reside in the computer lab for the exclusive use of graphic design and art students.
  • Keller Gallery now has white walls and a black floor, new lighting, and internet access for multi-media displays. The Gallery Program has built a reputation as a prestigious venue for professional exhibits of contemporary art from around the country.
  • The Department acquired the entire basement of Cabrillo Hall and created a painting classroom, senior studios, a darkroom and the Cabrillo Gallery.
  • The number of art majors has increased every year and now averages 120 students, with around 30 graduating every year. Lots of Senior Shows!
  • For the Photography and Graphic Design areas, we have acquired an Epson 9600 44” digital printer, one of the best professional color printers on the market. It is capable of making enormous HD color prints of archival quality.
  • Every other year, Eugene Harris takes about 20 Art and Design students to Europe for a semester. They spend the first few weeks traveling in Italy, England, and Austria, then live in Paris for the rest of the semester.

Again, we would be very grateful if you would take a few moments to respond to the questionnaire. Please feel free to call or come by and visit us at any time or attend one of our openings. We hope to hear from you and thank you for your help.

With warmest regards,

Jim Skalman, Chair
