Goodyear, AZ (10/7) – Point Loma Nazarene’s Sam Cyr claimed the individual title and tied a college mark with a first round 60 at the Grand Canyon University Fall Invitational at Golf Club of Estrella on Tuesday. The Sea Lions placed second as a team, behind only CSU San Bernardino.

Cyr, the defending NAIA National Champion, shot a 15-under 60-70-71 -- 201 - to capture the tournament by six strokes over Cal State San Bernardino's Gene Webster, who also shot three under-par rounds (68-70-69 -- 207).

San Bernardino teammate Joe Alldis shot 68-69-71 -- 208 was third, helping the Coyotes win the team title (843) by 22 strokes over Point Loma (865). Cal State Monterey Bay was third at 869.

Cyr had 13 birdies and two eagles to charge out to the two-round lead Monday. His opening round 60 is a new course record and put plenty of distance between himself and the rest of the field. Only six other college players, all from the NCAA, have scored a 60. There are no recorded 60s among NAIA players.

The record-setting 60 began quietly. Cyr missed a three foot birdie putt on the first hole and made a six foot downhiller for par on the second. Then the fun began. He was nine under par through 11 holes and 11 under par through 13 holes. He hit all fairways in regulation and missed one green (#18). On that hole he landed his drive to the right greenside bunker and sunk a seven foot putt for par.

With better luck Cyr could have shot a 58. Besides the missed putt on the first hole, he lipped out birdie putts on #12 and #17.

Cyr’s previous career low at PLNU was a 66 and his personal best was a 62.

PLNU teammate Trent Castro (215, 73-72-75) finished tied for 20th. Joel Salmond tallied a three-round 224 (75-74-75), good for a tie for 29th. Sean Stevens came in tied for 33rd (225, 72-73-80) while Marc Machado tied for 47th (229, 76-78-75).

The Sea Lion finish was impressive considering the tough 18-team field.

Point Loma Nazarene returns to the greens on Monday when they take part in The Master's Fall Invitational at Robinson Ranch Golf Course in Santa Clarita, CA.
