Fresno Pacific Wins Region II Championship

San Diego, CA (5/4) - Top-seeded Fresno Pacific defeated # 3 seed Azusa Pacific, 5-0, on Friday to win their second straight Region II title.  The Sunbirds yielded just four games total in three doubles matches and then put the match away with wins on courts one and three singles.

On Thursday both FPU and APU (16-4) advanced to the finals of the Region II Tennis Championship after recording semifinal wins. In the first semifinal of The first match featured FPU versus the tournament hosts, No. 4 seed, Point Loma Nazarene (13-7). The Sunbirds defeated the Sea Lions 5-0, winning all three doubles matches and then posting two wins in singles. Postseason rules mandates that play is stopped once a team gathers in the five points necessary for the win.

Azusa Pacific and #2 seed Vanguard were the next teams to take to the courts. APU surprised by taking all three doubles points and needed just two points in singles to advance. The Cougars did that with wins on courts one and four. Vanguard (18-3) picked up their lone point on court three singles.

FPU (21-5) receives an automatic bid to the national tournament. However, all four participating teams are highly ranked and will appear at nationals regardless.
