San Diego, CA (3/22) - On a spectacular Saturday with the Pacific Ocean as a backdrop, the campus of Point Loma Nazarene played host to nearly 300 athletes from 16 schools all across the country for the annual PLNU Track and Field Invitational.
The three day non-team scoring event actually began on Thursday with the start of both the heptathlon and decathlon portion of the PLNU Invitational. Friday saw the conclusion of the two multi events.
George Fox dominated the decathlon, taking the top four spots of the 17-man competition. Ben Dillow gathered in 6920 points for the win. For the women, it was Linda Rainwater of local UCSD wining the heptathlon with 5057 total points. Four PLNU ladies competed in the event with three taking the two-through four spots: Sable Otey (4844), Rebecca Gustafson (4691) and Emily Holding (4334).
Otey's total is tied for third all-time at PLNU with Gustafson fourth and Holding eighth.
Friday also saw the meet kick off with the men's and women's hammer throws. Thirty-six more events were held on Saturday starting with high jump and javelin at 9:00 am and concluding at 6:15 pm with the men's 4x400 meter relays.
The Sea Lions posted some impressive times and marks during the meet section Invitational. Landon Bright won the men's 5000 meter run with a time of 14.59.67, good for a provisional NAIA time and close to an automatic.
The Loma men's 4x400 relay timed in at 3:18.60, good for second and good for a provisional time.
On the women's side, Otey's 100 meter hurdle time of 14.27 not only was best in the event, it was an automatic qualifying time. Gustafson was second in the 400 meter hurdles but easily qualified for nationals with a time of 103.74.
The women's 4x300 relay team combined for a time of 3:53.77, which won the event and was an automatic qualifying time and third all-best at Point Loma.
PLNU will host the third of three straight track meets at home with a scoring meet on Saturday.
