Rochelle Short, Head Coach
Rochelle Short, who played
for PLNU for three seasons (2001-03), was named the seventh head coach in the 30-year
history of the university’s volleyball program. The 2008 season will be Short's first at the helm.
“I’m excited to be coming home,” said Short. “Point Loma has
a great tradition. I am blessed to be given the opportunity to coach here. I
believe this program has limitless potential.”
A 2004 PLNU graduate with a degree in industrial
organizational psychology, Short has experience as a volleyball coach and administrator
for many years, mainly at the club level. She mentored for two seasons under
respected ex-USC coaches, current Sacred Heart Head Coach Rob Machan and
current Azusa Pacific Head Coach Chris Keife. Short’s most recent position was Assistant Director for the Temecula Volleyball Club where she was
responsible for the management of more than 20 teams.
Short earned multiple accolades during her playing career as
a middle blocker for Point Loma. She was named as an all-conference, all-region
and NAIA first-team All-American in both her junior and senior seasons and was selected
as team MVP in 2003. She played on PLNU teams that compiled a 92-19
overall record and finished second, third and fourth at the NAIA National
Championships. Short is in the university record books in 13 places, including third
in career blocks and fourth in career kills.
“We are thrilled to have Rochelle as our volleyball coach,”
said PLNU Athletic Director Dr, Carroll Land. “I have no doubt that Sea Lion volleyball will continue to flourish
under her skilled coaching and leadership. Not only will Rochelle be able to
draw on the experiences of a tremendous playing career, she has achieved
success as a coach and she has a recruiting network already in place.”
Rochelle is married to husband, Mark, a police officer in
the city of
Newport Beach.
The Shorts live in
Murrieta,
CA, and are the parents to three
children; Brooke, Bryce and Ryleigh.
