W. Shelburne Brown

Dr. Brown, president of Point Loma Nazarene University from 1964-1978, guided the university through markedly significant years both academically and financially. His caring and innovative leadership evidenced outstanding insight, sound judgment and elevated constituent relations to a new level. With vision and courage, Dr. Brown instigated the university's historic move from Pasadena to Point Loma peninsula in San Diego. He left his strength and courage in the on-going spiritual and educational values of Point Loma Nazarene University.

Dr. Brown was committed to a broad-based athletic program for men and women, and he enjoyed a special relationship with those involved in the athletic programs at Point Loma Nazarene University. An active sportsman, his life exhibited a unique dedication to the higher values of vigorous physical activity, the essence of fairness and sportsmanship, and the challenge to always do one's best. An oft-used quote of Dr. Brown's was by Robert Browning, "Man's reach should exceed his grasp or what's a heaven for?" His life and leadership embodied this concept.

Established in 1983 under the leadership of Sam Mallicoat, the W. Shelburne
Brown Memorial Golf Classic is currently sponsored and administered annually by Point Loma Sports Associates. Each year, revenue from the tournament will be added to this endowment and, in addition, will be used to fund other current scholarships and special needs of the athletic department.

The funding of this endowment was initially begun through the commitment of the Point Loma Sports Associates board of directors in recognition of the on-going scholarship needs. While the original goal was $50,000, the endowment has grown to more than a quarter million dollars.

The corpus of the endowment will be kept intact. Endowment earning shall be used for athletic scholarship, and other special needs of the Point Loma Nazarene University athletic department, as decided by the board of directors of Point Loma Sports Associates.

Over the past years, money raised from the W. Shelburne Brown Memorial Golf Classic has sponsored golf team scholarships, their participation in the NAIA National Championships, helped purchase needed items of equipment and financed the Point Loma Sports Associates Outstanding Female Athlete Award. The Point Loma Sports Associates and or Point Loma Nazarene University will appreciate your tax-deductible gifts to the W. Shelburne Brown Athletic Endowment.

It is fitting that the W. Shelburne Brown Athletic Endowment shall be a permanent revolving resource to Point Loma Nazarene University athletic endeavors.
