The Way Facts

What is The Way?

The first followers of Christ embarked on an unknown journey full of trials as well as fellowship, understanding, and growth through the Spirit. They called their movement “The Way”. “The Way” at PLNU promotes similar experiences for incoming students entering a new adventure in higher education.

Does this take the place of New Student Orientation?
No. Students must attend NSO to obtain information about registration and living on campus. Our program adds additional elements designed to further prepare students for entering Point Loma Nazarene University.

Who will be our Course Instructors?
Outings will be lead by PLNU students or staff who have been a part of our Guide Development Program and hold certifications in wilderness medical training, CA commercial drivers license, and adventure skills trainings.

What does the cost cover?

The $235 fee covers all of your food during the trip, transportation, group equipment and trip guides.

How many students go on each outing?

Each group will have 8-10 students plus two or three leaders. Small groups work well for group dynamics, permits, and safety considerations.

Do I need any special equipment?

No. We will provide all the group camping equipment and can provide backpacks and sleeping bags to those who need them. Please see the “What to Bring List" for specific information about equipment for the trip.

What kind of shape do I need to be in?

Our goal is for you to enjoy your experience in the Sierra’s while being challenged physically. That said, your trip leaders will try and strike a good balance that fits where you and the rest of your group are at. We strongly encourage everyone to engage in some type of regular physical activity in preparation for the trip. This will make your experience much more enjoyable.

What kind of things will we be doing each day?

Every day will be a little bit different. Normally we will hike between 5-10 miles a day. The evening times will center around group time and sharing about our lives with each other. Time will be set aside each morning for devotions. Towards the latter half of the week you will get to experience a 24-hr solo. Other options might include making a summit attempt on one of the peaks in the area, trout fishing, rock climbing, etc.

What is a solo?
Past participants have consistently listed this experience as one of the highlights of their week. During the latter half of the trip everyone will get an opportunity to spend up to 24 hours alone. This is a time to spend some quality time with God, journal, read, reflect on the week, and think about your transition to PLNU. Each participant will have their own solo “campsite” and be equipped with the basic essentials. Participants will also have the opportunity to fast during this time if they choose to do so.
