The Point Loma Nazarene University Department of Communication and Theatre hosted the 2007 PLNU Video and Film Festival last April in Salomon Theatre. About 100 students screened the best short films, documentaries, commercials, newscasts, and other projects produced in media communication and broadcast journalism production classes in the 2006-07 school year.
The “Best Television Show” and “Best Project of the Year” was awarded to Tamilyn Foster and Andrew Silberberg for their documentary called Pulse. The documentary included interviews with extreme sport champions in Southern California, all woven together with the adventures of three students discovering that they can surf and snowboard on the same day in Southern California.
Mauricio Perez won the awards for “Best Film,” “Best Directing,” and “Best Editing” for his short film, Shadow. The film explores the concept of an inner demon that lives inside of everyone, and what might happen when it is let out.
Perez was also honored with the award for “Best Commercial” for his commercial called The Safer Choice, for PLNU Cable Channel 3: Your Channel.
Shaun Conde’s film, Fortune Smiles, a short comedy about a group of kids playing make believe as treasure hunters, won the awards for “Best Art Direction” and “Best Special Effects.”
Daniel Page was honored with “Best Intro Project” for his short, silent film, Please Be Seated. The film shows two injured men and their comical stories of how they ended up in a hospital waiting room.
The evening concluded with the presentation of the two annual awards, including the Carol LeBeau Award for Outstanding Broadcast Journalism Student, and an award for the “Best Media Communications Student.” The Carol LeBeau Award was given to Heidi Ortlip for her outstanding work as producer of Coastline News, PLNU’s student-produced news show. Christina Fung received the award for “Best Media Communications Student.”
Students can submit projects they wish to enter in the festival. The best projects from production classes will also be selected to be screened at the upcoming PLNU Film Festival in May of 2008.
