Channel 3 Produces New Sports Show

Look out ESPN, there’s competition brewing in sports television. Budding anchor and producer Kyle Stanley knows sports, and he’s getting ready for the big time.

Stanley, a junior Media Communications major, has recently written, produced, and hosted a second episode of Channel 3’s second sports commentary show, Sports Entertainment Tonight, or The SET. Those involved with the television studio agree that the show is up there with some of the best Channel 3 has produced.

“As far as programming goes, it is one of the best shows we’ve ever done,” said senior Technical Assistant Sean Trank. “It looks really professional and smooth.”

Dr. Hueth, Professor of Communication, agrees.

“Some aspects of this show are very professional,” said Dr. Hueth. “Employers are going to look at Kyle’s work and say ‘this guy understands what he’s doing.’”

Dr. Hueth says that he’s been pushing for a sports show since he got to Point Loma, and it wasn’t until last year when Stanley approached him to take on the project.

The first episode of The SET was completed in the spring semester of 2008 and left Stanley aspiring to do more with its format and look. The Channel 3 team had its sights set on a higher standard.

“Our second show is really the result of the first episode,” Stanley said. “We learned from our mistakes and made some major improvements.”

The SET, which is 30 minutes in length, mimics the look and feel of a show like ESPN’s SportsCenter. What makes it unique is that it is entirely Point Loma sports. The latest episode premiered at 8:00 pm on Thursday, November 20, 2008. The episode features volleyball, men’s and women’s soccer, and the Falcioni Report.

“What makes this show is the variety of stories we cover,” Stanley said. “We actually get out there and interview athletes and coaches.”

This episode of The SET features two sit down interviews. The first is a player profile on star volleyball player Melissa Boer, and later in the show is a special in studio interview with soccer coach Tim Hall.

Stanley and The SET crew think that the show will thoroughly entertain anybody who tunes in.

“Especially being on a small campus,” Stanley added, “This show aims to give the athletes’ perspective for people who aren’t athletes.”

Having now produced two episodes of The Set, Stanley has put some major league experience towards his dream career in sports media. Stanley has already completed an internship with Padres Channel Four, and has been asked to come back next season. On top of that, he is pursuing another internship with sportscaster and former NFL linebacker Jim Laslavic at NBC 7/39.

Dr. Hueth thinks that Stanley shows the ambition that could take him far in the industry if he puts his mind to it.

“Kyle is something unique,” said Dr. Hueth. “He’s in that top ten percent. He’s so focused and intelligent, and frankly a joy.”

Until he makes it big, Stanley will continue covering Point Loma sports for Channel 3: Your Channel.
