By: Stephanie Reynard It has been over two years since
the debut of the pirate movie, The Isle Nevis on the Point Loma campus,
but the film has continued to thrive. The short film that began as a
concept in a fall 2003 communication practicum course, turned into a
complete project by spring 2004. Alumni Jason Carter, Joel McGinty, and
Chris Roberts wrote the script and were responsible for directing,
filming and producing, respectively. The plot of the film takes place
in a child’s imagination. It is the story of the child, Cole, who
becomes a man and avenges his father’s death against the evil pirate
Captain Marcetti and finds hidden treasure on the Isle Nevis. The film
was shot around San Diego, with fight scenes in caves along Sunset
Cliffs and complete pirate ships filmed on The Star of India and the
Californian in San Diego Harbor. The Isle Nevis premiered on May 4,
2004 and has been an official selection at many festivals, including
the San Diego Film Festival 2004, Cancer Kills Film Fest and the
California Independent Film Festival 2005. The film also took second
place this summer in the “College Drama” section of BestFest 2005. The
film is currently waiting to hear from the Forest Film Festival in
Portland, Oregon as well as the Nashville Film Festival, which could
potentially lead to an automatic qualification for the Best Short Film
Academy Award competition. A special edition DVD of The Isle Nevis was released in May 2005, which
included the final version of the film, a photo gallery and outtakes
from the film. The film’s writers are all now working in TV and film. Carter is
currently working for DreamWorks animation and recently married Katie
McFarlane, PLNU class of 2004, this summer. Katie was an associate
producer on The Isle Nevis, and she now works for Disney animation.
McGinty is a cameraman for Fox 6 in San Diego, and is currently working
as Director of Photography on a documentary project and other projects.
Roberts is a production coordinator for Digital OutPost, a production
company in Carlsbad, and got married to Lindsay Hoehl on August 5,
2005. He is currently working on securing the rights to a book to adapt
into his first feature film.
