Students Get Involved With Local Film Festival
Communication majors Katie McFarlane and Rebekah Macias, along with two other PLNU students, were heavily involved in the 2nd Annual San Diego Film Festival that featured more than 70 international, narrative, documentary, and short films.
Senior Katie McFarlane, a broadcast journalism major, served as the festival’s Volunteer Coordinator, among other duties. She was responsible for finding all of the volunteers and organizing meetings, schedules and shifts during the event.
“I have a broader understanding of the film industry,” said McFarlane. “It has been very educational seeing what filmmakers experience trying to get their names known."
Most communication majors complete an internship such as this one sometime during their undergraduate studies. The internship allows students to gain real-life experience in their desired field.
Sophomore Rebekah Macias, a media communication major, also assisted with the festival. She managed one of the festival participant registration areas.
“This will be a great experience because I will be interacting with actors, directors, producers, and many other people in the field,” said Macias.
As a sophomore, Macias is just beginning to think about what she wants to do career-wise and is thankful for the opportunity to work with the festival.
“The festival allowed me to get a head start in the industry,” Macias stated. “I am looking forward to having hands-on experience and discovering if I have a place in the film business.”
All of the students played integral roles in the success of the festival.
“Point Loma honestly has the best interns I have ever worked with, and we are so lucky to have their help,” said Robin Laatz, executive director of the festival. “All four of them are hard workers who get the job done, in a professional manner, and most importantly, with a great attitude.”
The San Diego Film Festival ran from September 17-21, 2003.
