Definition:


Managerial and Organizational Communication focuses on the relationship between communication and human behavior in all organizational contexts (business, government, nonprofit). At the heart of the discipline is a recognition that organizations are created, maintained, and changed through human communication. An ability to assess and manage interpersonal, group, and organizational communication processes and create a collaborative environment is essential in today’s turbulent information environment.

The Study of Managerial and Organizational Communication:

  • focuses on the ways people create and negotiate their organizational worlds through both formal and emergent procedures and networks,
  • enhances the skills necessary for effective and productive organizational management and membership, and
  • achieves a thorough understanding of organizational processes and procedures by integrating academic analysis and practical organizational application.

Program Objectives:

  • To offer students a flexible program grounded in social scientific theory focused on the study and practice of those organizational activities most dependent on communicative behavior (e.g., interpersonal competence; collection and diffusion of information; conflict management; leadership; decision-making; group process management; and research).
  • To provide practice in oral and written communication, collaboration skills, and critical thinking through in-class activities, organizational analysis, and internship opportunities.
  • To promote ethical practices in all communication contexts and encounters.
  • To prepare majors for their chosen fields of interest which may include:

Customer Relations
Public/Community Relations
Selling Advertising
Employee Communication
Entrepreneurship
Management

  • To help prepare students for communication-relates careers that rely heavily on communication training and skills including government service, law, social and human services, education, and ministry.
  • To prepare students for graduate work in various areas of business and Communication & Theatre.

The Chronicle of Higher Education

According to a recent article in the Chronicle of Higher Education, Robert M. Diamond states:
In conducting workshops over the past decade on how to design curricula, I have asked considerably more than 1,000 faculty members—from a cross section of academic disciplines and institutions—the same question: "What basic competencies or skills should every college graduate have?" The responses have been remarkably consistent. They typically include skills in communicating (writing, speaking, reading, and listening), mathematics (especially basic statistics), problem solving, and critical thinking; interpersonal skills (such as working in groups and leading them); computer literacy; and most recently, appreciation of cultural diversity and the ability to adapt to innovation and change.
