Point Loma Debate Enjoys Championship Season

The PLNU Debate team had a banner year in 2006-07, winning two of the three National Championship titles awarded by the National Parliamentary Debate Association (NPDA), the nation's largest intercollegiate debate organization. PLNU's team of Timothy Kamermayer and Griffith Vertican won the NPDA National Championship Tournament at Colorado College, going undefeated in eight preliminary rounds and seven elimination rounds of competition against 240 of the nation's best teams. Additionally, the Point Loma debate squad was the number one program in the nation for the year-long sweepstakes race when compared to the hundreds of other NPDA schools competing from UCLA and Cal Berkeley to the University of Florida, from Notre Dame to the U.S. Air Force Academy. PLNU has won this year-long championship award twice before in the last five years. At the NPDA National Championship Tournament, Point Loma Nazarene University also won the Second Place Sweepstakes Trophy comparing the squad's success against all other universities at the championship tournament. Point Loma won first place in this category in 1999, the year they hosted the NPDA National Championship.

The Point Loma Speech and Debate team also won First Place at many other tournaments throughout the academic year, including the San Diego Mesa Olympics tournament, the Azusa Pacific University Swing tournaments, the Grossmont Griffin Invitational, PSCFA Fall Championship tournament at CSU Long Beach, The UCSD Sun God Invitational Tournament, The Wheaton University (IL) Tournament, the PSCFA Spring Championship Tournament at L.A. Valley College, and the NCCFI Christian College Nationals at Cal Baptist University. Details on these and other tournament results can be seen in the tournament archives.
