School of Theology and Christian Ministry

*2008 REUBEN WELCH SERMON CONTEST - The Welch Sermon Contest is open to Senior students of Point Loma Nazarene University. The student does not need to be a major in the School of Theology and Christian Ministry to participate in the contest. Its purpose is to encourage the development of a preaching mind that will minister the Gospel of Jesus Christ to the twentieth-first century world. The three sermons judged to be the best examples submitted by the students will be preached in the University chapel April 7, 9, and 11. A monetary gift will be awarded to each of the students finalists. Participants should note the following issues that will provide the criteria for judging the sermons: 1. The sermon is expected to be faithful to the biblical message. 2. The sermon ought to have a basic grounding in the rich theological traditions of the Christian church. 3. The sermon needs to address persons living in the contemporary world. 4. The sermon is not to exceed 2500 words in length. 5. The sermon manuscript will be presented as a typed document with double-spaced lines. 6. The sermon manuscript must be turned into Pat Jafry in the office of the School of Theology and Christian Ministry by March 31, 2008. 7. Recognition of awards will be given during the Senior Banquet of the School of Theology and Christian Ministry, May 5, 2008. If students are concerned about the structure and style of the sermon, they may consult a basic manual (handbook) on preaching (e.g., Thomas Long, The Witness of Preaching). http://www.pointloma.edu/SchoolofTheologyChristianMinistry/ANNOUNCEMENTS.htm

Art, Music, Theater, Literary and Film Announcements

*IAN HOMINICK - PIANIST - MARCH 14 - Ian Hominick is a Nova Scotia native who now teaches at "Ole' Miss.” Perhaps this odd pairing of background culture and present culture is what informs Hominick's performances. One newspaper critic was led to say, "Despite his many successes, Ian Hominick remains a very down-to-earth, approachable individual, an attribute which makes him an excellent teacher and an informative performer." And Hominick has also been praised for his, “… flair and virtuosity.” Ian Hominick visits PLNU on Friday, March 14 at 7:30 p.m. in Crill Performance Hall. Students, faculty and staff may pick up their FREE tickets in the music office. All others pay $12 or $15. This is a part of the PLNU Piano Series. www.ianhominick.com

*INES IRAWATI, PIANIST AND FRIEND - MARCH 25 - Ines Irawati is not just an extraordinary musician, she is the caring and passionate accompanist for the vocal students in the Music Department. Each and every vocal student will tell you that a performance by Ines is well worth attending. We are all fortunate that she will be gracing us with a recital on March 25 and 7:30 p.m. in Crill Performance Hall. This event is FREE. www.inesirawati.com
