*BSN APPLICATION FOR FALL 2008 SOPHOMORE NURSING – The deadline to apply for the Fall 2008 BSN program is February 1, 4 p.m. Applications are available in the School of Nursing in Taylor Hall or from the BSN Program Assistant, Marsha Reece, T101. RETURNING STUDENT CHECK-IN - All returning students are required to check in to indicate “I am here.” To check in you can log into any computer at my.pointloma.edu. If you do not check in by Friday, January 18, 2008, you may be dropped from all your classes!

LOOKING FOR A GREAT CLASS TO TAKE THIS SEMESTER? - FOR THE FIRST TIME, A CLASS ON WOMEN IN MAJOR RELIGIONS IS BEING TAUGHT AT PLNU AND. . .YOU SHOULD BE IN IT! -- This class looks at the impact that religion has on women and the influence women have had on religion. The major religions examined include Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, Christianity, Goddess Worship, and Indigenous religions. -- We will encounter women from around the globe and women of various color, ethnicity, nationality, and social class. -- The class covers general topics as well as specific issues surrounding the sacred texts, ethics, sexuality, violence, and ecology. -- Our approach includes archaeology, anthropology, sociology, literary criticism, biblical hermeneutics, theology, and feminism. -- MALE and FEMALE students who care about each other and the role of women and religion in our world today will want to take this class. Financial and Scholarship Announcements


NEW STAFFORD LOAN BORROWERS FOR SPRING 2008 - If you are new student to PLNU this 2008 Spring semester and have applied for a Stafford Loan, or if you are a continuing student this 2008 Spring semester and have applied for a Stafford Loan for the first time during your tenure here at PLNU, you are required by federal law to complete a Stafford Loan Entrance Interview. Your Stafford Loan will not be credited to your student account without an entrance interview. To satisfy this requirement, please go to www.edfund.org , click on EDTEST at the upper right-hand corner of the website and follow the instructions accordingly. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Student Financial Services at x2538, sfs@pointloma.edu, or drop by our office at Draper Hall.

MEAL PLAN CHANGES - IMPORTANT: The deadline to change your meal plan for the Spring semester is FRIDAY, JANUARY 18, 2008. If you would like to change your meal plan, please go online to your student portal and make the changes within the first two weeks of the semester. Changes to meal plans are not allowed after January 18th. If you have any questions, please contact Student Financial Services at ext. 2538 or sfs@pointloma.edu.

HEALTH INSURANCE WAIVER - IMPORTANT: The deadline for waiving or accepting the University's health insurance for the Spring semester is FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 1, 2008. Waiving or accepting the health insurance must be done through your student portal. If you waived the health insurance in the Fall semester, you do not need to do it again in the Spring. All students who have not waived their health insurance by February 1st will be charged a $320 health insurance premium for the Spring semester. The health insurance fee cannot be waived after this date, even if you have other insurance coverage. If you have any questions, please contact Student Financial Services at ext. 2538 or sfs@pointloma.edu.

CAL GRANT DEADLINE IS MARCH 2, 2008 - If you would like to apply for a Cal Grant for the first time in the 2008-2009 Academic Year (Fall 2008 and Spring 2009), you must go to the Records Office to request a GPA Verification to be sent to CSAC (California Student Aid Commission) AND file a 2008/2009 FAFSA at www.fafsa.ed.gov by MARCH 2, 2008.

- Confidential Support Groups for students are now forming in the Wellness Center:

Grief and Loss.
Have you experienced the loss of a loved one? Sharing experiences, along with professional support, is a valuable tool in overcoming deep grief. The Wellness Center has designed a Grief and Loss Support Group for those students who have lost a family member or close friend. This group will help you understand the process of grieving, help you cope with your emotions, and assist you in planning for your future without your loved one.

Relationships without regret.
Whether you are sexually pure, hanging on to your virginity by a thread, or sleeping with someone, you can maintain and/or reclaim your sexual integrity not just throughout your youth, but throughout your whole life. Join this group to learn to guard your mind, heart, and body against sexual compromise and develop skills to maneuver your way through your single years with grace… and without regrets.

Hearts and Homes Divided: Coping with the Effects of Your Parents' Separation & Divorce.
This group is for students whose parents have separated, divorced, or are in the process. Participants will learn about the short and long term effects of divorce on children/adults. The purpose of this group is to learn how to deal with and understand the impact that your parents' divorce may have on you, as well as to identify with, encourage and support other group members.

Managing Moods.
Do you find that you struggle with negative emotions that get you into trouble sometimes? Join this group to learn a variety of cognitive and behavioral strategies that will help you think and feel better. Participants become skilled at problem solving, time management, assertiveness, conflict resolution, relaxation techniques, and changing problematic moods and behaviors.

Preparing to leave PLNU.
Are you graduating and feeling uncertain about what is next? Join this group to discuss with others your ambivalence about leaving Pt. Loma. Share your nervous excitement (or dread) with others!

My Family Drives Me Crazy!
Do you feel like your family just doesn’t get it? Do you sometimes feel like you don’t fit in with your own family? Join this group to discover how your family has impacted your development and to learn skills for relating with your parents as an adult.

*WOMEN’S BIBLE STUDY FOR UPPERCLASSMEN FEMALES - Join us for a study as we look at the story of Ruth in the Old Testament. This will be a six-week study beginning January 23, 2008. SEX IN THE GREEK - January 16th at 6 p.m. Film presentation in the Greek and panel discussion will follow indoors. The theme for discussion is: hate and violence in our society. The movie presented will be "The Laramie Project.” This event is sponsored by Student Development, Spiritual Development and ASB.

DONATE A MEAL FOR HOMELESS MINISTRY - This semester you have the opportunity to donate up to one caf meal a week to Bread of Life, a homeless ministry on campus. All you have to do is e-mail your school ID number to me each week and one of your caf meals will become a sack lunch that we will give out during our ministry in downtown San Diego. Art, Music, Literary and Film Announcements


*JAZZ AT THE POINT: CYRUS CHESTNUT, JAZZ - We are happy to announce the return of Cyrus Chestnut to the PLNU campus. This outstanding jazz pianist has played with everyone from Quincy Jones to Betty Parker while maintaining his own solo career. And this is a program that no one should miss if you love great music or if you are just getting to know about music. The concert starts at 7:30 p.m. in Crill Performance on January 22. This event is FREE for PLNU STUDENTS. $12 - Staff, faculty, children and military; $15 Adults.

*POINT LOMA PIANO SERIES: PAUL KENYON, PIANIST - Piano soloist Paul Kenyon will be demonstrating his technical virtuosity and his passion for music with a performance in Crill Performance Hall on Friday, January 25 at 7:30 p.m. His concert will include the music of composers Scarlatti Chopin and Villa-Lobos. This concert is FREE to students, faculty and staff. $15 Adults, $12 Students, senior citizens, children and military.

*THE FRENCH CONNECTION: JULIETTE SINGLER IN FACULTY RECITAL - Faculty member Juliette Singler will perform tomorrow night in Crill Performance Hall at 7:30 p.m. Accompanied by pianist Rebecca Rollins, Singler will perform the works of French composers and students of the immortal Nadia Boulanger. This is an opportunity to practice your comprehension of the French language as well as to enjoy music sung by a very talented vocalist. Admission is FREE.

*ENCUENTRO 10 - Admissions is hosting Encuentro 10, January 18-20. Approximately 150 youth from Spanish speaking Nazarene congregations will be on campus for church leadership training. *URBAN TERM 2008 INFORMATION SESSION - What is Urban Term? The Urban Term is a total learning and living experience in the city of San Diego. Students will take three academic courses, live in the urban setting (City Heights), and work in a community service or ministry internship. The Urban Term is 8+ weeks long, from May 17 to July 12, 2008. Enrollment is limited. Bring your caf tray to Nicholson Commons Thomas (Room 204) on Wednesday, January 16. The Tutorial Center is located in Bond Academic Center next to Career Services. 

16 Steps to Better Grades!

1. Be physically ready to do your best.

2. Have definite times/places to study; keep supplies handy.

3. Get started on assignments without wasting time.

4. Reduce the clutter in your study area.

5. Pay attention in class; take notes or highlight to increase focus.

6. Make use of available help---tutors, study partners, profs.

7. Make outlining a learning tool.

8. Review early and often.

9. Be an active learner; involve your senses.

10. Give yourself little rewards.

11. Face up to the problems that are distracting you.

12. Divide study time into shorter, consecutive periods with brief breaks.

13. Focus on specific goals for each study session.

14. Practice positive self-talk; “I can do this.”

15. Go beyond studying for the test; study for mastery.

16. Pace yourself, rather than push yourself too hard.
