Press Release:

Point Loma Nazarene University Honors “Cereal Entrepreneur”

SAN DIEGO, CA (April 28, 2008) – At its Entrepreneur Enrichment Program Banquet on May 1, 2008, The Fermanian School of Business at Point Loma Nazarene University honored Stephen R. Miller as its “Student-Entrepreneur of the Year” for his business plan on “The Cereal Company.” Miller earned the honor with “The Cereal Company as a new, unique café that would distinguish itself by offering cereal instead of coffee, creating a casual environment for customers. Offering a variety of cereal for the customers to choose from will allow customers to individualize their bowl and personalize their experience.” Miller, a Senior double-major in Business Administration and Philosophy/Theology with an Accounting minor, earned $3,000 for his project and was mentored by Robert G. Harp of Global Hospitality Resources, Inc. and Gale Bamford of Bamford Cattle Feeders. Upon graduation, Miller will initiate additional market research in Boulder, Colorado for a anticipated start-up in 2009-10.

The 2007-08 EEP Banquet honored seven completed plans and student and team entrepreneurs, each of which received a $500 award and additional gifts. Stephen Haskell also was awarded the David and Dorothy Latter Free Enterprise Award for his project “Harbor Light Commerce Center,” a plan proposing a small business incubation site for low and middle income entrepreneurs.

In addition to Miller and Haskell, the other participants included:

  • “The Academy of Entrepreneurship – Starting Early with Entrepreneur Education for High School Students” – Jane Schmitz

  • “Ticketshare – Fractional Ownership of Professional Sports Tickets” – Jarod Gorla

  • “The Coastal Cottage – La Jolla’s Gift Boutique” – Denise Nielsen

  • “Clinic in a Box – The Education of Health and Wellness in the Developing World” – Greg Spencer, Jason Kroening, and Greg Pollard

  • “PowerStats – Innovating the World of Soccer Statistics” – Luke Pinneo

Interest in the entrepreneurial program of the Fermanian School of Business continues to increase with twenty applicants for the 2008-09 from both the undergraduate and graduate programs.
