BACKGROUND 


Professor Ataide brings considerable business experience to his current position as Professor of Entrepreneurship and Director of the Fermanian Business Center at Point Loma Nazarene University in San Diego, California.  As Director, Professor Ataide provides primary leadership for the strategic planning of the Center's mission, and teaches contemporary management, sales management, entrepreneurship, and the small business institute at the undergraduate and graduate schools.

Ataide holds a B.A. degree in Speech Communication (Magna Cum Laude), a Masters Degree in Theology and a Juris Doctor degree, and he has been a Member of the California State Bar Association.  In 2002, he completed Stanford Graduate School of Business's Executive Management Program and from 2004-06 attended Harvard Business School's Owner-President Management Program.  At Harvard, he received the "Best Strategy Critique" and was selected as his class commencement speaker in 2006.

RESEARCH

As a Professor, his primary area of research and teaching is entrepreneurship, and he has successfully presented peer-reviewed papers on entrepreneurship at the Association of Collegiate Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP) national convention in 2007; the Christian Business Faculty Association national convention in 2008; and his paper The PLNU Entrepreneur Enrichment Program as an Alternative to Business Plan Competitions appears in the Summer 2009 edition of the Christian Business Academy Review.  He presented De-constructing the Entrepreneurial Myth: An Alternative Pedagogy of Collaboration over Competition at the April 2009 WASC Academic Resources Conference.  At the 2009 ACBSP Region 7 conference, his presentation titled From Globalization to Globalrelation: Responding to the New Voice of Entrepreneur Education Pedagogy was selected "The Best of the West Presentation" and was later presented at the ACBSP Annual Convention in July 2009.  Works in progress include identifying specific forms of social entrepreneurship, religious entrepreneurship as well as entrepreneurial efforts with Portugal and France, where he travels frequently.

 

INTERESTS


Ataide has worked for more than 20 years as an entrepreneur in developing several inter-related diversified agricultural companies, focused upon fresh tree fruit production, storage, sales, logistics and distribution.  He is co-owner of Mountain View Fruit Sales, Inc. and Summeripe Worldwide.  The firms service many of the largest U.S. retail grocery accounts.

He has recently addressed or provided strategic consulting services to the Farm Credit Administration, Kaiser-Permanente Hospitals of Southern California, International Agricultural Exposition and Farm Credit Southwest of Arizona, and served on many agricultural industry boards.  He remains active in the business community through his business partnerships within the companies, as well as being involved in several active business start-ups.

He and his wife of 29 years reside in Point Loma and have three grown children.
