Daniel Schanaker has seen his career dream take shape during his four years at Point Loma. Always interested in math and science, Dan opted to major in engineering physics. “It seemed like a practical use for my interests,” he said about selecting the major. “It’s been really good because we receive a broad engineering background here at Point Loma with a strong foundation in the physics behind everything. Since we touch on many areas of engineering, we learn about different options.” One of the engineering options Dan has learned about has especially captured his interest: medical engineering. “We had a speaker come to talk to all the physics majors about medical physics. The speaker talked about the work he was doing in radiation cardiology. That really sparked my interest,” Dan said. In addition to his solid academic preparation, the inspiring guest speaker, and his internship experience, Dan credits the physics and engineering department and PLNU’s atmosphere for the development of his dream. “All four years, Dr. Dee Puntenney has been really interested in helping me with what I want to do in the future. I’ve felt really supported by him,” said Dan. “The department is a tight-knit community. We’ve had a lot of one-on-one contact with professors.” Currently interning at defense contracting company Raytheon, Dan is planning ahead for when he graduates in May. He has already had an interview with Cardio Dynamics, a company that makes heart monitoring technology.
