Supporting Dreams PLNU Point Loma Nazarene University Katie Stauffer grew up watching her parents serve others and she knew she wanted to do the same.

“My parents were two of the most selfless people I knew growing up,” she said. She also grew up knowing she wanted to go into the medical field. Through watching her mom, who was a nurse, Katie decided that nursing was the perfect way to combine service and medicine.
With her desire to serve and care for others, Katie loves that nursing gives her a chance to work with people on a daily basis.

“It’s a very relational career,” she said. “Nursing is a field you can really serve people through, people who are sick physically and spiritually.” Katie feels she has been greatly prepared for her future during her time at Point Loma. It has shaped her not only as a nurse but also as a person.

“Point Loma falls right behind [my parents and God’s Word] in making me who I am,” she said.

She has also been influenced by the School of Nursing in particular. “The School of Nursing has incorporated what it means to have integrity in nursing,” she said. “They have been really faithful. The professors are incredible people. They care about students and are passionate about what they do.”

Now, as Katie prepares to graduate, she is considering all the different directions she could go with nursing. The next step is looking at different hospitals and applying for jobs. She wants to work in an ICU setting at a hospital in Southern California. She also hopes to go back to school in a couple years to get a master’s degree in nursing or go to nurse practitioner school.
But Katie is open to God’s leading. Though she doesn’t know for sure where she will end up for her first job or in her career, she is holding onto Proverbs 16:9: “In his heart a man plans his course, but the Lord determines his steps.”

“I’m trying to be content knowing that God has a plan. Content to not have everything figured out now,” she said.
