As a college sophomore, Steve Haskell decided his calling was to help
the poor in less developed countries. He just didn’t know specifically
what that meant for him. He did know that business would be the
avenue he would use. He talked to several professionals who told him
that accounting would be the best major for what he wanted to do. He
also chose a minor in international development, which would prepare
him to work in other countries. His time at Point Loma has
included involvement in the on-campus club Students in Free Enterprise
(SIFE). Steve is the acting president of SIFE. He also has cross-cultural experience.
Steve studied abroad in Costa Rica and Peru the spring of his sophomore
year. There he learned Spanish, which he used that summer when he went
to Nicaragua to work with a microfinance organization. These
experiences and his coursework began leading Steve in the direction of
the microfinance field. A Point Loma MBA student told him about a
microfinance organization called FIPS AC, which helps relieve poverty
in marginalized communities in Mexico. Steve decided to look into it to
see how SIFE could get involved. Little did he know, he was
about to find the job he had been searching for. With still a semester
of college left, Steve has been hired to be the executive director of
FIPS USA, the daughter company of FIPS AC. After graduating,
Steve will be in charge of overseeing the microfinance operations in
Baja and maintaining relationships with investors of different FIPS
entities in the U.S. and Europe. He is currently helping the company
with fundraising by looking for potential investors. Steve is excited about being a part of this type of organization and about making a positive impact. “I get to have my dream job that directly serves the Lord and helps the poor,” he said.
